Obon is an event in Japan to worship the spirits of ancestors.

富山県・八尾町は、毎年9月１・２・３日の３日間、この「風の盆」一色に塗りつぶされます。
その情景を「夢の章」「うつつの章」「幻の章」と題して描いてみました。
Every September, on the first, second and the third, the mood of "Kaze no Bon" fills the town of Yatsuo in Toyama prefectre.
I drew it under the titles "Chapter of Dreem", "Chapter of Reality" and "Chapter of Illusion".

「風の盆」に魅せられて
Fascinated by "Kaze no Bon"
”水音が聞こえない”
そう思って、太田とめは足を止めた。
高山線の八尾駅近くにある自分の家から、一気に長い坂ひとつを……
直木賞作家・高橋 治さんの『風の盆恋歌』の書き出しです。
友人の一人に「風の盆病」を患っている男がいました。
ある時、彼に一冊の本を手渡されました。
本と言えば最近では稀に推理小説を読む程度の私にとって、この手の文芸作品は苦手です。
そんな私が気紛れにでも手に取ったのは、その病の感染力の強さのせいかもしれません。
そして、やはり、罹患しました。それも強烈に。
症状の一つとして、小説を幾度も読み返し、「夢慧」氏のＣＤの中の「風の盆」を何度となく聴くことになってしまった私の頭の中に、徐々に、「風の盆・三部作」を始めとする一連の作品のイメージが固まってきたのです。
美しく、そしてなにより物悲しい、高橋 治さんの描いた「風の盆」の世界にどっぷり浸かり、
♪悲しい人は みんな来い 八尾の町に 泣きに来い……♪
胡弓の旋律に身を委ね、一心に筆を動かしました。
"I cannot hear the sound of water anymore".
Thinking thus, Tome Ota stopped walking.
From her house which is near Yatsuo Station She got a long slope from her house near Takayama line・Yatsuo station on the Takayama Line, she had been walking without pausing along a long sloping path……..

The above is the opening passage of the Naoki prize winning writer Osamu Takahashi's, "Kaze no Bon Koi uta" or The love Songs of Kaze no Bon".
One of my friends, a man who was suffereing from "Kaze no Bon" sickness gave me the book to read.
Speaking of books, for someone like me who reads mysteries occasionally, such literary works are out of my depth.
It is probably the infectious power of the book that made me pick it up on a whim in the first place. And on reading, I got further infected, that too intensely.
One of the symptoms was reading it again.
And as I kept listening to the song "Kaze no Bon" from the Collections of Mr. Yumesato over and over, gradually the image of a series of works including "A Trilogy of Kaze no Bon" began to consolidate. I fully immersed myself in the world of Mr. Osamu Takahashi which is beautiful and sad.
Surrendering myself to the melody of Kow, I began painting singlemindedly.
三部作の番外です。
『風の盆恋歌』のラストシーンをイメージして描いた作品です。
小説の登場人物・清原父娘が涙を堪えて踊る姿を、シルエットの二人がじっと見つめています。
This work is the outermost part of the trilogy. This was drawn imagining the last scene of the moving masterpiece "Kaze no Bon Koiuta".
Two silhouettes are gazing at Mr. Kiyohara and his daughter, two characters from the novel who are dancing while holding their tears back.

いまや冬の神戸の風物詩ともなっている「ルミナリエ」は、阪神大震災犠牲者追悼のイベントです。
微かに耳に届くレクイエムの旋律を確かめながら、一筆一筆に御霊安かれとの祈りを込め描いてみました。
Luminarie, the winter light-up held in memory of the victims of the Great Hanshin Earthquake has become a characteristic of winter Kobe.
Remembering the faint melody of the Requiem, I painted every stroke with a prayer to the departed souls.

砂漠に想う

I think to the desert.
何故か無性に砂漠が描きたくなった事がありました。
そんなある時、通り掛かった書店の店先で「サハラ砂漠の砂」と書かれた小瓶を見付けました。
その偶然がこの２点の作品になりました。
実際の砂漠には勿論、行った事はありません。
子供の頃見た写真や映画などの記憶を頼りに、あまり深く考えず、想像を思い切り膨らませ、描きました。
There was a time when I badly wanted to paint the desert.
At such a time, I happenened to find a small bottle in front of a bookstore with the words,"Sand of Sahara" at a shopping arcade. These two works are a result of that coincidence.
Ofcourse I have never been to a real desert.
Relying only on the memories from photos and movies that is saw in my chidhood, without much thinking, I let my imagination run wild to create these works.
